چکیده

Team processes are inherently dynamic phenomena theoretically, but they have largely been treated as static in research. It is well established that they are important contributors to team effectiveness; the lack of attention to dynamics means that team process mechanisms are essentially unstudied. I examine three primary themes. First, I speculate as to why it is that research treatments of team processes are largely static and what may account for this inertia. Second, I consider the conceptual underpinnings of process dynamics with respect to (a) emergence across levels and (b) in terms of variability, trajectory, and cyclical fluctuation. Third, I discuss three ways that research on team process dynamics can be advanced by: (1) adapting existing research methods, (2) creating innovative measurement techniques, and (3) advancing new research paradigms. Empirical examination of team dynamics is on the research frontier. These suggestions hold promise for advancing understanding of dynamic process mechanisms. Team Process Dynamics

Bridging the Gap between I/o Research and Hr Practice: Improving Team Composition, Team Training, and Team Task Design

to the present day, the use of teams in organizations has increased dramatically. Organizations have and are continuing to restructure work around teams rather than individual jobs (Ilgen, 1994). In parallel, the need and demand for theoretical and empirical research on team functioning has intensified. Past reviews of the literature on small groups and teams note considerable growth in the vol...

Introduction to the special issue on nonlinear organizational dynamics.

It has been twenty-five years since organization scholars began to investigate how chaos theory and nonlinear dynamics could be used to explain change in human organizations (Loye & Eisler, 1987), and in particular, business corporations (Nonaka, 1988). While many were first introduced to organizational dynamics through chaos theory, organizational scholars quickly fanned out over the theoretic...

Teams in organizations: from input-process-output models to IMOI models.

This review examines research and theory relevant to work groups and teams typically embedded in organizations and existing over time, although many studies reviewed were conducted in other settings, including the laboratory. Research was organized around a two-dimensional system based on time and the nature of explanatory mechanisms that mediated between team inputs and outcomes. These mechani...

Advancing our Understanding of Team Motivation: Integrating Conceptual Approaches and Content Areas

Although research on team motivation has been one of the fastest growing research domains in organizational science, progress in this domain has been hampered by a lack of integrative reviews. Thus, we develop a theoretical framework in this article to summarize and discuss different conceptual approaches to team motivation for the following six content areas: team design, team needs, team goal...
